What To Wear

Some tips on looking your best in photos!

I recommend finding one piece that is a must have for your session. Whether it’s your outfit, or for the children. Once you find that one, you can begin basing the rest of the outfits off of that.

Dress comfortably in something that makes you feel your best. If you pick an outfit that you are constantly having to fuss and fidget over, it will show up in your photos. For dresses and skirts, pick something that is long enough for your kids to play around. Flowy dresses and skirts photograph beautifully.

Compliment and coordinate, but don’t get too matchy. Coordinating outfits in family photos creates a cohesive and visually appealing look, enhancing the overall charm of the portraits.

Layering patterns and textures is a great way to bring a family aesthetic together. For example: chunky knits, such as a cardigan over a dress, or lovely light linens and a patterned dress. Adding suspenders to a toddler outfit, or a scarf on a cool fall day.

Colour tends to be the most important factor. Our favourite colours to photograph are burgundy, olive green, navy blue, rust, dark lilac, rose, blush, mustard yellow, and mauve.

A note on children in dresses: Please put shorts or bloomers under dresses to hide diapers and underwear from showing in photos.

Please steer clear from:

  • Bold patterns and logos. While subtle patterns are fine, bold patterns and big logos will draw the eye making it rather distracting in photos. The more subtle the better.

  • Steer away from bright colours like hot pink, aqua, yellow, and lime green. Any bright colours will reflect onto the skin of whoever is around them. This is called “colour cast”.

  • Shoes to stay away from: Athletic shoes, too high of heels, and flip flops. Leather shoes and boots are always a great way to add that rustic look to your wardrobe.

Maternity Session

Embrace Your Bump! Choose outfits that highlight and flatter your baby bump. Flowy dresses, maxi dresses, or skirts can be both stylish and comfortable. They gracefully drape over your body and add an ethereal touch to the photos.

If your partner or children are joining the session, coordinate outfits. Choose complementary colours or styles to create a cohesive look.

Choosing the Right Colours and Coordination:

Preparing for your child’s portrait session is such an exciting part of the experience! The right outfit choices can make a big difference in how the photos turn out, helping to highlight your child’s personality while keeping the images timeless and beautiful. Think of clothing and accessories as little tools to elevate the photos, making sure the focus stays where it should be: on your child’s joy, charm, and individuality.

Colour is the first thing that sets the tone for your photos. Soft pastels, earthy neutrals, and gentle shades create a timeless, modern look that works beautifully in any setting. These tones also complement skin tones and photograph well without overwhelming the image. If you’re dressing siblings, think coordinated rather than identical. Stick to a shared colour palette or theme, but let each child’s outfit have its own personality. This way, everyone looks beautifully tied together without looking too matchy matchy.

Timeless Classics:

Choose wardrobe pieces that stand the test of time, ensuring that the photos will remain relevant and appealing in the years to come. . Adjust the wardrobe according to the season, using warmer outfits for fall and winter and lighter, breathable clothing for spring and summer. Additionally, select shoes that match the overall look, such as ballet flats, boots, clean sneakers, or bare toes for little ones!

The key to styling your little ones lies in balancing comfort and style. Selecting the right colours, coordinating outfits, and paying close attention to accessories, you can ensure that the child's personality shines through in the photographs!

Newborn and Milestone Sessions

Dress yourself in something light and casual. Remember that you should feel at home (even if sessions take place in a field or studio), so think comfortable yet stylish vibes that reflect you and your personal style.

Layers work great! Pairing simple basics with textured overlays. An example for mom: A Kimono or open sweater can work nicely over a casual dress.

For your baby, pick a neutral onesie, and some favourite accessories, like a knitted sweater, bonnet or booties.

Collect a few of your favourite baby blankets and wraps, we will also bring a couple along, as well as a Moses basket.
